A court in Astana has ruled on a parking lot fire that destroyed an Audi A6. The incident occurred in May 2025, and the cause was a discarded match and violation of vehicle operation rules, reports infohub.kz.
The Taraz City Court considered a claim for damages and found both car owners at fault. The defendant, while in his car, lit a cigarette and threw a still-burning match out the open window. At that moment, the parked Audi A6, equipped with a gas cylinder system, caught fire.
An expert examination showed that the fire was caused by the ignition of a gas-air mixture formed due to a gas leak from the plaintiff's car. The case materials state: "The source of ignition was a match thrown by the defendant."
The criminal case against the defendant was dropped for lack of intent, and the administrative proceedings were closed due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. However, this did not relieve him of civil liability.
At the same time, the court noted that the owner of the burned car also showed gross negligence. Before long-term parking, he failed to comply with mandatory fire safety requirements, leading to a gas leak. The court's decision states: "The fire was the result of a combination of two causes: the defendant's careless actions and the plaintiff's violation of vehicle operation rules."
According to an independent assessment, the damage exceeded 2.9 million tenge. Considering the degree of fault of each party, the court partially satisfied the claim and ordered the defendant to pay more than 1.6 million tenge in material damages and court costs. The court decision has entered into legal force.
