A 19-year-old employee of an order pickup point in Astana has been found guilty of stealing marketplace goods worth more than 14.9 million tenge and sentenced to five years in prison, the website infohub.kz reports.

Details of the scheme were disclosed by the city prosecutor's office. The young employee placed orders in the marketplace app for a wide range of items — gold jewelry, clothing, food and other goods. Upon receiving them, he secretly stole the ordered items, either swapping them out or returning entirely different items to the warehouse.

The supervisory authority cited the most telling episode: "The employee placed orders in the marketplace app for various goods: gold jewelry, clothing, food and other items. Upon receiving them, he secretly stole them, either substituting them or returning other items to the warehouse. For example, after ordering gold earrings worth 182,000 tenge, he returned them to the seller, replacing them with costume jewelry."

In total, the man stole 195 items worth more than 14.9 million tenge.

The court sentenced him to five years in prison. The victim's civil claim for damages was granted. The sentence has entered into force.
