Police in Astana have detained a 29-year-old woman suspected of giving birth in a hotel and discarding the newborn into a sewer, reports infohub.kz.
News of the incident spread on social media. The Astana Police Department confirmed the arrest and said an investigation is underway.
According to social media posts, the mother went into premature labor at six months of pregnancy.
Police stated that a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the discovery of the infant in the sewer.
Residents of a nearby apartment complex had repeatedly complained about disturbing screams coming from the hotel. They claimed to call patrols almost every night, but said police measures were insufficient.
The Astana Police Department reported that since the start of 2026, 19 calls had been made to emergency line 102 regarding this hotel. “For disturbing the peace, 13 individuals were held administratively liable, and 3 for violating public order,” police said.
The hotel owner was issued a notice to eliminate the causes and conditions conducive to criminal offenses. “This area is under constant monitoring by precinct police inspectors,” the department added.
Earlier, a live infant was found in a garbage bag in Aktobe.
