Police in Astana have detained a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman suspected of drug distribution. At one of the checkpoints on the way into the capital, law enforcement officers stopped a KIA car carrying the suspects, according to infohub.kz.

A search of the vehicle's interior uncovered a box containing two vacuum-sealed bags with a white powdery substance. Testing confirmed the substance was mephedrone weighing 2 kg.

In addition, during a search of the apartment where the detainees lived, police found about 1 kg more of the same substance, along with items intended for packaging it. All of the seized material weighed more than 3 kg in total.

A criminal case has been opened. Both suspects have been placed in a temporary detention facility.

"Police continue working to identify and shut down channels for the supply and distribution of drugs," the department added.

Earlier, it was reported that police stopped an Astana resident on the road and found a bag containing banned substances in her car.
