A man accused of killing a Scottish woman in Athens and disposing of her body in a suitcase is due to appear in court. This was reported by infohub.kz.
The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Elisabeth Jane Ross. Her body was found in an abandoned building on July 18. According to police, the suspect was arrested on Sunday. Despite the advanced state of decomposition, investigators were able to recover usable fingerprints. At the time, temperatures in Athens had reached 36 degrees Celsius.
The 26-year-old suspect is a foreign national who has been granted asylum in Greece. In line with Greece's data protection laws, his name has not been released. Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that he was born in Afghanistan and pursued a boxing career in Athens, but this information has not been officially confirmed.
Police detained the suspect after reviewing surveillance camera footage from near the building. The victim was identified with assistance from U.S., U.K., and Interpol authorities. The suspect was initially detained on illegal weapons possession charges, and now faces additional charges of murder and theft of more than 10,000 euros from the victim's bank accounts using her bank cards.
Greek officials said the suspect admitted moving the body but denied the murder allegations. Authorities are awaiting tissue analysis results to determine if the woman died from suffocation, as suggested by a preliminary medical examiner's assessment.
