Prosecutors in Kazakhstan's Atyrau Region have cracked down on misconduct in the spending of public funds, with the head of the construction department in Kurmangazy District losing his job over a housing purchase worth hundreds of millions of tenge, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the supervisory authority, in 2024 the local construction department bought 30 apartments in the village of Kurmangazy for 600 million tenge. It later emerged, however, that the residential building had never even been connected to the gas distribution network and was unfit for comfortable living.
Investigators established that the department head knew for certain that there was no gas supply even before the tender was held. Nevertheless, he organized the bidding, giving certain entrepreneurs a clear advantage.
The official's case was brought before a meeting of the ethics council. Following its review, the head of the Kurmangazy District construction department was dismissed from his post for an offense that discredits the civil service.
At the same time, prosecutors uncovered violations in Kyzylkoga District, where the head of the local construction department illegally transferred 900,000 tenge to a contractor for work that was never performed — he has been issued a warning of incomplete official compliance.
The authority added that three more officials in Atyrau Region have been held accountable for similar financial violations.
