I've never been a fan of sedans, but the Audi A6 made me reconsider. From the first moments behind the wheel, during overtakes on Al-Farabi and long corners, it was clear this car can surprise. I started getting used to it, then took it with my family to the Ushkonyr plateau, reports infohub.kz.
Under the hood of the test version was a powerful 3.0 TFSI quattro engine producing 367 horsepower and accelerating to 100 km/h in about 4.7 seconds. I spent almost all three days in Dynamic mode, as Comfort and Efficiency felt too relaxed. This car literally provokes you to press the gas, and sometimes I gave in. On a free stretch of highway, I reached 187 km/h, but it felt like the A6 was just getting started. The steering is impressively precise and smooth, as if turning in warm oil. The brakes also deserve praise, though on a new car with about 5,000 kilometers on the odometer, they seem overly sensitive.
When we turned off the highway onto the dirt road leading to Ushkonyr, I felt a wave of anxiety. The sedan's ground clearance is modest, so a couple of times I drove around ruts on the grass, fearing I might scrape the underside. However, the quattro all-wheel drive handled steep climbs and loose gravel admirably. The suspension pleasantly surprised me: on 18-inch wheels with low-profile tires, it absorbed bumps without transmitting them into the cabin.
There were five of us in the car: me, my wife, two daughters, and an adult niece. No one complained about space, even in the middle seat of the second row. The trunk swallowed all our luggage without effort. My daughters, who usually don't care what we drive, noted that the A6 is softer than any crossover we've tested before.
I did have a few complaints about the interior, mostly cosmetic. The main one is the glossy surfaces that quickly collect fingerprints and dust. On the other hand, the gear selector slider proved convenient, and the head-up display, though initially seeming too large, is adjustable. The ambient lighting is a delight: at night, when another car passed, the door on that side flashed red as a warning.
Over three days, I drove 248 kilometers, mostly in the city, including the trip to Ushkonyr and back. Fuel consumption averaged about 15 liters per 100 kilometers, which is acceptable for a 367-horsepower car in Dynamic mode. Sound insulation gets a B-minus: you can hear the engine during acceleration, but that's normal for this class.
In the end, I realized my dislike for sedans wasn't as strong as I thought. The A6 is the first car in my tests with the fewest complaints. It's for those who want to make an impression without a flashy exterior: businessmen, government officials, young people who value elegance and dynamism. Earlier, we covered a test drive of the Porsche Taycan 4S.
