The tenth day of competition at the Asian Games in Japan brought Kazakhstan's national team just one silver and two bronze medals, and the team dropped from fifth to eighth place in the unofficial medal standings, according to infohub.kz.
The only silver for the team came from high jumper Kristina Ovchinnikova. Clearing 187 cm, the Kazakh athlete fell three centimeters short of champion Barnokhon Sayfullaeva of Uzbekistan and nine centimeters short of her personal best of 196 cm.
Another competitor in today's high jump event, Nadezhda Dubovitskaya, holds the Asian record of exactly 2 meters. With a result of 184 cm, Dubovitskaya finished fifth.
Kazakhstan's men's trap shooting team took bronze. Alisher Aisalbaev, Daniil Pochivalov and Mark Pochivalov won the medal in the team trap event.
Arailym Shegenova took third place in kurash wrestling. Competing in the over-87 kg weight category, she became the first-ever Asian Games medalist in the history of Kazakhstan's women's kurash team.
Weightlifter Lyubov Kovalchuk finished just short of bronze. Closing out Kazakhstan's weightlifting performance at the Asian Games, she placed fourth in the over-86 kg category. Her teammate Aiganym Zhanbolat finished seventh in the up-to-86 kg weight class.
Kazakh shooters Alisher Aisalbaev and Eleonora Ibragimova made the Top 8 in the individual trap competition.
Kazakhstan boxing team captain Aibek Oralbay, competing in the over-90 kg weight category, advanced to the final.
Kazakhstan's women's team finished sixth in the 4x400 meter relay. Distance runner Maksim Frolovsky placed seventh in the 5,000 meters.
The water polo team won its third straight match. Defeating South Korea in the quarterfinals, the six-time Games champions advanced to the semifinals.
The men's volleyball team ended its losing streak. After defeats to Pakistan and Japan, the Kazakh volleyball players beat Uzbekistan and will continue the tournament with matches for 9th–16th places.
Yulia Putintseva became the first member of Kazakhstan's tennis team to reach the quarterfinals. Later, the duo of Alexander Shevchenko and Timofey Skatov followed suit.
After the tenth day of the Asian Games, Kazakhstan trails its main rival Uzbekistan by five gold medals in the unofficial standings. Our team, having dropped from fifth to eighth place, was overtaken by Thailand, Bahrain and Iran.
There is also a shortfall in the total medal count. Winning 99 medals is the target set for Kazakh athletes. With five days left until the end of the Asian Games, Kazakhstan's team has only 48 medals.
The XX Summer Asian Games in Japan officially opened on September 19. The multi-sport event, featuring athletes from 45 countries, will award 460 sets of medals: 217 in men's events, 204 in women's events and 39 in mixed events. Kazakhstan's team at the 2026 Asian Games includes 558 athletes competing in 35 sports.
