The fifth day of the Asian Games in Japan brought Kazakhstan's national team one gold, one bronze and four silver medals. In the unofficial medal standings, our athletes remain in fourth place, but Uzbekistan's team is closing in, reports infohub.kz.
The highlight of the day came from the rowers. Vladislav Yakovlev and Ivan Chernukhin became champions in the men's coxless pair event, bringing Kazakhstan its eighth gold of the 2026 Games.
Fighter Abdurashid Abdullaev won silver in the wushu sanda tournament, reaching the final in the up to 75 kg weight category.
Olga Shmeleva and Tatyana Tokarnitskaya took silver in the 500-meter kayak doubles. Sergey and Timofey Yemelyanov won bronze in the same distance in the canoe doubles.
Gymnast Milad Karimi became vice-champion of the 2026 Games in the floor exercise. Epee fencer Kirill Prokhodov also climbed to the second step of the podium.
Distance runner Daisy Jepkemey finished fourth in the 10,000 meters with a personal season best. Track and field athlete Maria Yefremova took seventh place in the triple jump. Alina Chistyakova sits in third place after the first day of the heptathlon.
The duo of Kazakh shooters Asem Orynbay and Alexander Mukhamediyev finished sixth in the skeet event. Valeriy Rakhimzhan placed one step higher in the 10-meter air pistol shooting.
The men's swimming team of Adilbek Mussin, Gleb Kovaleni, Aibat Myrzamuratov and Maxim Klimenko took fifth place in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. Weightlifter Otepbergen Aliyev also finished fifth in the up to 60 kg weight category.
Kazakhstan's women's water polo team painfully missed out on bronze medals. Our girls led 5:1 against Uzbekistan but ultimately lost in a penalty shootout and gave third place to Thailand.
Both 3x3 basketball teams have completed their performances at the Asian Games. The women lost to Singapore 4:11 in the play-in, while the men fell to Japan 17:18 in a dramatic battle.
Alua Balkibekova, competing in the up to 51 kg category, advanced to the quarterfinals of the boxing tournament. Boxer Torekhan Sabyrkhan also reached the same stage in the up to 70 kg weight class.
After the fifth day of the Asian Games, China leads with an incredible margin. Kazakhstan remains in fourth place, but Uzbekistan's team is close behind and currently has more medals.
The XX Summer Asian Games in Japan officially opened on September 19. The multi-sport event, featuring athletes from 45 countries, will award 460 sets of medals: 217 in men's events, 204 in women's events and 39 in mixed events. Kazakhstan's team at the 2026 Asian Games will include 558 athletes competing in 35 sports.
