Kazakhstan's Barys suffered their first defeat of the Kontinental Hockey League 2026/27 regular season, losing 1-3 at home in Astana to Khabarovsk's Amur in their third game of the campaign, infohub.kz reports.

The two sides had already met this season. At the preseason Republic of Bashkortostan Cup, the Astana club lost to Amur 1-5. The Ufa tournament trophy ultimately went to the Khabarovsk team, while the Kazakhs finished last.

At the start of the KHL season, the teams swapped roles. Barys won two home games, scoring 15 goals against Sibir and Salavat Yulaev. Amur scored just three times in three road games, losing to Metallurg (2-4 and 1-2 in overtime) and to the same Sibir (0-2).

Living up to the pre-game predictions, Barys looked the more active side early on. The hosts outshot the frequently penalized visitors 19-7 in the first period (penalty minutes 7-13). Yet it was the Far East club that scored the only goal. Midway through the opening frame, Yaroslav Likhachev struck on the power play.

Trailing in a regular-season game for the first time, Barys stuck to their game plan in the second period as well. But history nearly repeated itself. Shots were 21-14, the score 1-1. Garrett Pilon answered Artyom Shvaryov's goal for the Khabarovsk side to make it 1-2.

In the third period, Mikhail Kravets' men — with the coach working his 450th KHL game — kept up the pace. But their finishing let them down this time. A desperate late push on Maxim Dorozhko's goal in a 6-on-4 situation also came to nothing. What's more, the visitors scored into an empty net.

The KHL regular season, which began on September 5, runs until March 20, 2027. Each of the 22 teams will play 68 games. At the end of the regular season, eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs. The reigning Gagarin Cup holder is Yaroslavl's Lokomotiv, which beat Kazan's Ak Bars in six games in May's final series.

After playing three straight games at Barys Arena, the Astana club heads out on a road trip through Tolyatti, Magnitogorsk, Yaroslavl and Moscow.
