The Kazakh hockey club Barys Astana came from behind to defeat Avangard Omsk in a Kontinental Hockey League regular-season game for the 2026/27 season. The match, played at a packed Barys Arena, ended 5:1 in favor of the hosts, who had trailed during the game, infohub.kz reports.

The win was the third straight in the KHL for the Astana side. In the regular season, Barys has so far performed in streaks: after three consecutive defeats — to Neftekhimik, SKA and Ak Bars — Mikhail Kravets's charges have won three games, against the same Neftekhimik, Spartak and now Avangard.

The Eastern Conference match, held on October 10, ended 5:1 (1:1, 2:0, 2:0) in favor of Barys. The goalscorers for the winners were: Thompson (Logvin, Priski) at 08:12, Bailey (Daniyar, Day) at 23:51, Morelli (Day, Simonov) at 36:02 on the power play, Bailey (Daniyar, Pilon) at 43:19, and Thompson (Simonov, Morelli) at 56:44 into an empty net. For the visitors, Yakupov (Chistyakov, Rashevsky) scored the only goal at 04:06 on the power play.

The start of the game was not easy for the hosts. In the 3rd minute, a too-many-men violation led to a penalty for Barys. Two seconds before the fifth player returned, Nail Yakupov beat Andrei Shutov.

However, before the first intermission, Tys Thompson equalized — 1:1 — and in the second period the Astana side scored twice more. To the delight of the packed stands at Barys Arena, in the 24th minute the team's top scorer, Justin Bailey, scored after a solo rush. And in the 36th, Mason Morelli redirected Logan Day's slap shot into Nikita Serebryakov's net, converting a power play — 3:1.

In the 4th minute of the third period, the Astana side created such a scramble in front of the opposing net that the Omsk defenders left Bailey alone in front of an empty frame. Justin gladly completed his double — 4:1. Late in the game, the visitors pulled their goalie and conceded a fifth goal. Thompson completed his second double of the match — 5:1.

Having secured their eighth win of the regular season, the Kazakhs moved up to third place in the conference.

The KHL regular season, which started on September 5, will run until March 20, 2027. Each of the 22 teams will play 68 games. Based on the regular-season results, 8 teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs.

After a three-game home series, Barys faces a serious test — nine consecutive road games.
