Astana's Barys avenged last week's home defeat to Neftekhimik in Nizhnekamsk, as the Kazakh side came back from 2-4 down to win 5-4 in overtime, the website infohub.kz reports.
After a strong start to the Kontinental Hockey League regular season, Mikhail Kravets's team hit a rough patch. Three straight losses left observers puzzled about what had happened to a side that had opened the campaign with one lopsided win after another.
KONTINENTAL HOCKEY LEAGUE 2026/27
Eastern Conference. October 2
🏒 NEFTEKHIMIK (Nizhnekamsk, Russia) – BARYS (Astana, Kazakhstan) 4:5 OT (1:1, 1:1, 2:1, 0:1)
Goals: Bailey (Day, McCoshen) 04:37 (0:1), Nadvorny (Kol, Artemyev) 16:35 (1:1), Belozerov (Zhafyarov) 20:34 (2:1), Thompson (Simonov, Morelli) 27:08 (2:2), Fedotov (Petunin, Tochilkin) 44:18-PP (3:2), Tyanulin (Bikmullin, Mityakin) 47:32 (4:2), Omirbekov (Priskie, Bailey) 49:37-PP (4:3), Pilon (Day) 59:48-6-on-5 (4:4), Simonov (Logvin) 61:32 (4:5)
In Nizhnekamsk, things initially did not go the visitors' way either. The Kazakhs led for just a dozen minutes — exactly as long as the goal by Barys's top scorer, Justin Bailey, stood as the only one on the board. Before the end of the first period, the hosts had tied it at 1-1.
When Artur Tyanulin made it 4-2 for the hosts midway through the third period, it looked as though Astana's long losing streak would continue.
But the visitors found the strength to mount a comeback. First, Alikhan Omirbekov converted on the power play to make it 4-3. With 12 seconds left before the final buzzer, Garrett Pilon scored 6-on-5 to tie it at 4-4. Then in overtime, playing 3-on-3, Semyon Simonov netted the winner off a feed from Vsevolod Logvin to make it 5-4.
Remember who opened the scoring? The omen about Barys's first goal is working again!
The KHL regular season, which began on September 5, runs until March 20, 2027. Each of the 22 teams will play 68 games. At the end of the regular season, eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs.
On their foreign tour through Kazan, Nizhnekamsk and Moscow, Barys have one match left — against Spartak in the Russian capital.
