Kazakhstan's Barys failed to extend its winning streak in the 2026/27 Kontinental Hockey League: after victories over Neftekhimik, Spartak and Avangard, the Astana side lost to Sibir 2-3, infohub.kz reports.
For the second game in a row at a packed Barys Arena, the Kazakhs conceded first. This time it happened midway through the opening period: Barys was left shorthanded after Hunter Shepard inadvertently dislodged his own net. Former Barys player Darren Dietz was involved in Stepan Nikulin's power-play goal.
Before the first intermission the hosts not only equalized but took the lead. Defenseman Logan Day, extending his personal point streak to six games (0+10), set up Mason Morelli for a goal. Then the team's top scorer, Justin Bailey, threaded a clever pass to set up Kirill Savitsky for a shot. The captain made no mistake – 2-1.
KONTINENTAL HOCKEY LEAGUE 2026/27
Eastern Conference. October 12
🏒 BARYS (Astana, Kazakhstan) – SIBIR (Novosibirsk, Russia) 2-3 (2-1, 0-0, 0-2)
Goals: Nikulin (Bek, Dietz) 11:38 PP (0-1), Morelli (Day, Massie) 13:24 (1-1), Savitsky (Bailey, Daniyar) 18:09 (2-1), Bek (Dietz, Nikulin) 50:58 PP (2-2), Tyutnev (Orlov, Nikulin) 55:36 (2-3)
With ten minutes left before the third buzzer, Sibir coach Yaroslav Lyuzenkov went all-in, pulling Mikhail Berdin for a sixth skater. The plan worked. Seven seconds later Semyon Simonov headed to the penalty box, and 16 seconds after that Taylor Beck tied the game. Once again not without Dietz's involvement – 2-2.
Barys rushed to score a third goal and was caught on the counterattack. A costly mistake by Shepard, who failed to freeze an easy puck, handed Mikhail Kravets's charges a bitter defeat in a game they seemed to have won – 2-3.
At the start of the regular season, Barys routed the Novosibirsk side 7-1 in Astana. Today Sibir got its revenge.
The KHL regular season, which began on September 5, will run until March 20, 2027. Each of the 22 teams will play 68 games. Based on the regular-season standings, eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs.
In its three-game home series, Barys has yet to face Avtomobilist. After that, the Astana side will play nine straight games on the road.
