In the Swiss canton of Valais, the bodies of two Belgian climbers who had been missing for 34 years have been discovered, according to infohub.kz.
As reported by RIA Novosti, citing the cantonal police, a tourist spotted the remains. They had been exposed due to the melting of the Trift Glacier. DNA analysis confirmed that the bodies belong to the climbers who went missing in 1992 in the Weissmies area.
It is specified that the deceased were Belgian citizens, aged 39 and 41 at the time of their disappearance.
The cantonal police maintain a register of missing persons, which includes reports filed since 1925. Most of these are people who went missing in high mountain areas or in bodies of water.
Police noted that as glaciers retreat, remains of people who disappeared in the mountains decades ago are sometimes found.
It should be added that this summer in Switzerland is breaking heat records: July was the hottest on record. As a result, water levels in rivers and lakes have dropped significantly, and the rate of glacier melting has increased.
