Bogatyr Komir, Kazakhstan's largest coal producer, plans to significantly increase its output in the coming years. According to plans, the enterprise will mine 56.9 million tons of coal in 2027, which is 25.7% more than in 2025, reports the website infohub.kz.
Currently, the company, co-owned by entities from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Qatar, mines 45.25 million tons of coal per year. The increase is planned to be achieved by intensifying operations at two open-pit mines, Bogatyr and Severny. At the first, 38.9 million tons are planned for 2027, and at the second, 18 million tons. These volumes will be maintained for the following three years.
The volume of overburden removal will also increase: in 2027, it will reach 57 million cubic meters, which is 30.8% more than in 2025, when 43.57 million cubic meters of rock were removed. For comparison, in 2024, production amounted to 42.68 million tons, and in 2025, 45.25 million tons, of which 31.89 million tons came from the Bogatyr mine and 13.36 million tons from Severny.
The mining technology in the Ekibastuz coal basin is based on a conveyor principle: mining, crushing, conveyor transport, stockpiling, and loading. This ensures stable coal supplies without the use of haul trucks. Bogatyr Komir operates two of the three open-pit mines in the basin; the third, Vostochny, is operated by ERG.
The company's financial performance shows impressive growth. In 2025, Bogatyr Komir's net profit amounted to 29.1 billion tenge, compared to 677 million tenge the year before. Thus, profit grew almost 43 times.
The ownership structure has changed. Previously, co-owners were the quasi-state Samruk-Energy and Russian aluminum giant RUSAL. In 2025, Samruk-Energy began the process of exiting the asset. Currently, the company is owned by Forum Muider Limited, registered in the AIFC (previously in Cyprus), whose owners are Samruk-Energy (35%), Miradore Enterprises Limited, representing RUSAL's interests (35%), and Qatari private company Primet LLC (30%). Samruk-Energy has announced its intention to sell its remaining 35% stake to Qatari investor Primet LLC with a guarantee of dividend payments for previous periods.
