A government commission led by Deputy Prime Minister Qanat Bozumbayev has arrived in the Mangistau Region. It was established on the president's orders to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of military personnel during exercises, infohub.kz reports.
The commission includes the defense minister, the regional akim, the chief military prosecutor, representatives of the border service, and the leadership of six ministries. They are to assess the situation on the ground and determine further actions by government agencies.
"Particular attention will be paid to providing necessary assistance to the families of the deceased, establishing the circumstances of the incident, and coordinating the actions of the government agencies and services involved. The commission's work continues on site," the regional akimat said in a statement.
The tragedy occurred on September 24, when Navy servicemen were carrying out a training and combat mission on the Caspian Sea coast. According to the Ministry of Defense, the weather deteriorated sharply, a strong wind rose, and 19 people were swept out to sea.
The ministry reported the deaths of nine servicemen. Three were rescued, one of whom was hospitalized. The search for the others continued. The operation involved naval personnel, emergency services rescuers, and aviation.
A criminal case has been opened into the deaths of the servicemen. Investigators are establishing the circumstances of the incident and conducting examinations. President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. He declared September 25 a national day of mourning.
