The death toll from a mass attempt by migrants to cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has reached 90, according to the website infohub.kz.
Spanish radio station Cadena SER reported that Spanish law enforcement had recovered 74 bodies, while Moroccan authorities found another 16. Earlier reports had put the number of dead at 57.
In the night of July 30-31, thousands of Moroccan migrants breached the border in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in North Africa. Spanish authorities mobilized the army to stabilize the situation.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her country is ready to take extraordinary measures to protect its borders and citizens' safety, including temporarily reinstating border controls with Spain.
Spanish authorities stressed that by Friday evening most migrants had left Ceuta and returned to Morocco. Initially, it was reported that at least 57 migrants died in a stampede while trying to reach land over a wall topped with a border fence, and their bodies were pulled from the water.
