South African swimmer Chad le Clos' home was destroyed in a fire, leaving him homeless a day after his record-breaking achievement at the Commonwealth Games. This was reported by infohub.kz.
The 34-year-old athlete wrote on his Instagram page that his apartment in Cape Town was damaged in a fire on July 30. He was at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, at the time. Le Clos said his apartment, along with several others in the building, was completely destroyed by the fire.
A day before the fire, Le Clos won a bronze medal in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay, earning his 21st Commonwealth Games medal. This was a record. "On the evening of 30 July, amidst breaking the all-time Commonwealth record, a fire started in my apartment block, which quickly spread to my home. Sadly my home, where I've lived for more than a decade, burnt down and there is nothing left to salvage," Le Clos wrote.
Le Clos offered condolences for the death of an elderly neighbor in the fire. He is grieving the loss of an elderly man who had been his neighbor for many years in the oceanside suburb of Sea Point. The athlete said his foundation would help other affected neighbors rebuild their homes.
Chad le Clos won Olympic gold in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics. He has a total of four Olympic medals and 16 world titles. Glasgow was his fifth Commonwealth Games, and he plans to compete at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
