Chinese carrier Urumqi Airlines is in talks with Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport to launch flights to Zaisan and Katon-Karagai, reports infohub.kz.
For now, the focus is on launching regular flights on the routes Urumqi–Karaganda, Gulja (Yining)–Astana, and Gulja (Yining)–Almaty, according to the ministry's press service. However, the parties are also discussing other destinations for the future. For instance, Urumqi Airlines may start flying to Oskemen and Semey, as well as launch flights to the East Kazakhstan Region, particularly to Katon-Karagai. Another tourist destination is Zaisan, on the border with China.
Katon-Karagai attracts tourists with a wide variety of recreational activities. Visitors can swim in the Bukhtarma Reservoir, visit the famous therapeutic Rakhmanov Springs, go trekking in the Altai Mountains, or drive along scenic routes through the gorges.
Near the town of Zaisan in the Abai Region lies the lake of the same name, as well as the Kiin-Kerish tract with its fantastic Martian-like landscapes.
Urumqi Airlines previously served only domestic routes in China. Apparently, Kazakhstan will become its first international destination.
