A Chinese investor spent nine years and considerable resources to prove that his wife had defrauded him and attempted to seize his property. The woman was eventually arrested in the United States and sentenced to 65 years in prison, according to infohub.kz.
According to the South China Morning Post, the story involves 52-year-old investor Li Ping. After making money on the stock market and becoming wealthy, he met Zhang Shudan, a bank employee, in 2014.
The woman told Li about her difficult childhood and how she had earned her education, thereby gaining his trust. Soon, the investor transferred a large sum to the bank where Zhang worked, and then they got married. Li also bought his wife an apartment in Shenzhen.
However, suspicious events began after the wedding. One day, Li's car brakes failed, and he narrowly avoided an accident. Soon after, his pregnant wife suddenly disappeared and flew to Los Angeles.
It turned out that the woman had taken money and documents for several apartments.
The investigation revealed that Zhang and an accomplice deliberately damaged the brake system of Li's car. Their goal was to kill him and take over his wealth. It also later emerged that the child she was carrying was not Li's.
After that, the investor began searching for his wife. He hired private detectives and lawyers in China and the US, and offered a $1 million reward to anyone who provided information about the woman.
In 2020, a Chinese court declared their marriage invalid and returned Li's property. In 2024, Zhang was arrested in the United States.
A US court found the woman guilty on multiple charges, including fraud, human trafficking, and child abduction, and sentenced her to 65 years in prison.
