The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States, meeting in the Turkmen city of Avaza, adopted a statement supporting practical steps to prevent an arms race in outer space, infohub.kz reports.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, participants expressed serious concern that outer space could become an arena of military confrontation. They stressed the need for a complete ban on the placement of any weapons in outer space, as well as a ban on the use or threat of force against space objects or with their use.

The statement stipulates that space systems and ground-based infrastructure must not be used for purposes contrary to the maintenance of international peace and security.

The discussion of the topic intensified amid statements about the possible deployment of strike weapons in orbit by the United States.
