A U.S. congressman, Democrat Jamie Raskin, has launched an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to infohub.kz.
The House member demanded that FIFA provide all documents and correspondence related to gifts, payments, or other benefits given to President Donald Trump and his inner circle. He also requested visitor logs for FIFA's office in Trump Tower, which the organization opened last year.
The House Judiciary Committee asked that Infantino give a formal, stenographically recorded interview. Raskin's letter also noted the U.S. Department of Justice's decision to dismiss indictments in a corruption case involving world football, including the prosecution of over 20 top FIFA officials and sports marketing executives in 2015.
The outlet notes that the relationship between Trump and Infantino drew scrutiny before the World Cup. In December, during the tournament draw in Washington, Trump was presented with a specially created "FIFA Peace Award." Last July, the organization opened an office in Trump Tower in Manhattan. During the World Cup, Infantino and Trump were at the center of a controversy after FIFA reviewed a disputed red card to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun following an appeal by the White House.
A separate part of the letter addresses FIFA's ticket sales policy for the World Cup, which is already being investigated by several state attorneys general. "The latest mutually beneficial scheme orchestrated by FIFA and President Trump is not a victimless crime. It harms Americans. Having gained a privileged position under the Trump administration, FIFA decided it could cheat its consumers with impunity, primarily through unlawful price gouging and fraudulent ticket sales for the World Cup," the letter quoted by the outlet said.
FIFA must provide the requested documents and agree on a date for the interview by August 9. However, Raskin lacks the authority to compel Infantino to testify since Democrats do not control the House majority, unless his initiative is supported by Republicans.
Recall that during the 2026 World Cup, FIFA's disciplinary committee suspended the U.S. forward's ban with a one-year probation. The decision allowed Balogun to play in the round of 16 match against Belgium despite a red card in the previous game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. After the verdict, President Trump thanked the organization for "correcting a blatant injustice." The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) accused FIFA of "crossing all boundaries of decency" in overturning the player's suspension. Trump later said he did not know how the red card rule worked. Earlier, the FIFA head responded to critics of the World Cup hosted in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
