Kazakhstan's government has allocated 3 billion tenge from its reserve fund for the construction of a protective dam on Lake Alakol in the Zhetysu region. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed the relevant resolution, reports infohub.kz.
The funding will allow the construction of a protective dam with a total length of 6 kilometers. "Of this, 2.5 km will be for the village of Koktuma and 3.5 km for the village of Akshi," the government explained.
Active bank protection work began back in 2025. Over a 1.7 km stretch, specialists carried out earthwork and concrete work, laid gabion structures, and reinforced the slope.
The dam will not only protect residential buildings and recreational areas but also boost the further development of Alakol's tourism potential. Over the past two years, more than 243 km of protective dams have been built and reinforced in six regions of Kazakhstan: Akmola, Aktobe, West Kazakhstan, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan, and Pavlodar.
The government assured that the implementation of water management and tourism infrastructure projects is under constant supervision of the Cabinet of Ministers.
