Kazakh tennis player Anna Danilina and her Japanese partner Miyu Kato have ended their run at the WTA-500 tournament in Monterrey, losing in the quarterfinals to the Russian-British duo of Maria Kozyreva and Maia Lumsden with a score of 3:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:10, reports infohub.kz.
The match lasted 1 hour and 36 minutes. The first set went to their opponents, but in the second, Danilina and Kato, trailing 5:6 on the tie-break, won three consecutive points to take the set 8:6. On the super tie-break, the Kazakh-Japanese pair fell short, losing 3:10. The overall points tally was 68:78 in favor of their opponents.
After the Monterrey tournament, Danilina will head to New York, where she will reunite with her regular partner Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia. Krunic, alongside Croatian Mate Pavic, failed to achieve success in the mixed doubles at the US Open 2026.
Kazakhstanis did not participate in mixed doubles at this tournament. Alexandra Bublik's partner Venus Williams withdrew due to injury, as did Elena Rybakina, who was scheduled to play with Taylor Fritz. Rybakina's participation in the singles draw of the US Open 2026 is also in question due to an Achilles injury sustained in Cincinnati.
Nevertheless, even without playing a single match at the American major, Rybakina could become the world No. 1 for the first time in history. For that to happen, the US Open 2026 must not be won by Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, or Coco Gauff.
The US Open is an annual Grand Slam tennis tournament played on hard courts, the last of the four majors in the calendar year.
