The recent outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in New York's Upper East Side has drawn attention to the illness. There, 72 cases were confirmed, more than 50 people hospitalized, and two patients died.
Experts note that infection occurs by inhaling tiny water droplets containing Legionella pneumophila bacteria. Sources of infection can include poorly maintained central air conditioning systems, hot water systems, pools, jacuzzis, fountains, and water parks.
Legionella bacteria are found in natural bodies of water and soil, but they pose the greatest threat in artificial water systems where favorable conditions allow them to multiply rapidly.
Experts stress that regular cleaning, disinfection, and timely filter replacement in HVAC equipment significantly reduce the risk of infection. Legionnaires' disease is not transmitted from person to person, so efforts should focus on prevention and proper maintenance of engineering systems.
