Large-scale genetic studies reveal a striking homogeneity in the gene pool of modern Kazakhs, challenging long-held stereotypes about 'clan character,' reports infohub.kz.

Aruzhan Zhumabayeva, a 20-year-old student from Almaty, grew up in a family where arguments between her parents were regularly attributed to their different clan origins: her father is an Argyn, her mother an Adai. Relatives would ascribe her mother's emotionality to the 'Adai temperament' and her father's persistence to 'Argyn stubbornness.' Aruzhan, who is herself calm, became curious about how valid these stereotypes are.

Professor Amanzhol Kalysh, a researcher at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, explains that stereotypes about clans have historical and geographical roots: different tribes lived in different climatic zones and engaged in different economies, shaping local cultural traits. The cult of the clan (ru) and genealogical tradition (shezhire) remains stronger in western and southern Kazakhstan, where a nomadic lifestyle persisted longer, while in the north and east, clan memory weakened under the influence of the Russian Empire and Soviet rule.

Modern genetics paints a different picture. Leyla Dzhansugurova, director general of the Institute of General Genetics and Cytology, notes that appearance is shaped by the interaction of genotype and environment, while clan affiliation is transmitted through the Y-chromosome, which has almost no influence on appearance. Maternal genetic lines are also important: mitochondrial DNA, passed down from the mother, governs energy potential.

Scientists at the Center for Paleogenetics and Ethnogenomics analyzed the genomes of 1,021 individuals from various Kazakh clans and found 'remarkable genetic homogeneity.' Differences between zhuzes (tribal confederations) by Y-chromosome are about 10%, and between tribes within a zhuz about 20%. The most common haplogroup is C2 (48.9%), ranging from 83% among the Kerey to 10% among the Argyn. However, these differences concern only the Y-chromosome, not the entire genome: over centuries of inter-clan marriages, most hereditary material has become shared.

Kazakhs, like many Asian peoples, carry genetic variants associated with reduced activity of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, but this is a population-wide trait. The main signals of natural selection are concentrated in chromosomes related to immunity and metabolism — a result of adaptation to harsh climates and a nomadic diet.

As for 'clan character,' geneticists associate it with upbringing and environment. An innate sensitivity of the nervous system may develop into impulsivity only with appropriate examples in the family. 'I do not expect any sensational discoveries of a "clan" character,' emphasizes Dzhansugurova. The scientists' conclusion: modern Kazakhs are genetically homogeneous, and notions of 'clan character' remain part of cultural heritage, unconfirmed by science.
