According to infohub.kz, Shyngys Alekeshev, official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, explained the procedure for mandatory medical exams for drivers over 65.
Mandatory medical exams for this category of drivers have been in effect in Kazakhstan since 2014. However, from August 25, only one change takes effect: if the exam is not passed on time, the driver's license may be temporarily suspended automatically. Thus, the change only concerns the mechanism of suspension, while the requirement for medical exams has existed for a long time.
At the same time, Alekeshev emphasized that a driver who has just turned 65 does not need to rush to a doctor immediately. The first mandatory medical exam will be required by age 67. After that, the medical certificate is valid for two years. Subsequent exams should be conducted at 69, then at 71, and thereafter every two years.
"So those who have just turned 65 should not create a fuss and stand in queues. You can calmly undergo the medical exam closer to age 67," the Interior Ministry representative said.
The medical exam can be taken at any convenient location: a private clinic, a state polyclinic, at one's place of residence, or in another city. The main condition is that the medical organization must have the appropriate competence to conduct such an exam.
"What happens if you don't undergo the medical exam on time? Your license may be suspended, but it is not revocation. Once you pass the exam, your driver's license will be automatically reinstated. I also want to reassure: initially, police officers will explain the new requirements and warn the driver, so if a person didn't know or forgot to take the exam, they will be given the opportunity to do so calmly. I officially state: no separate fine for not undergoing the medical exam is provided by law," the official representative assured.
If the medical exam has already been completed but the data has not yet appeared in the database, it is enough to show the police officer a paper certificate.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that amendments to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Road Traffic" will come into force on August 25, 2026. Now drivers over 65 will undergo medical exams every two years.
