Police in Almaty and the Almaty region have shut down further drug distribution channels, reports infohub.kz.
Bakhytzhan Amirkhanov, head of the department of the Committee on Combating Drug Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, provided details. According to him, in Almaty, police detained a 33-year-old man, and during a search of his car, 130 packets containing a powdery substance were found and seized.
"During a check at the suspect's place of residence, narcotic drugs, electronic scales, packaging material, and other items used for packaging prohibited substances were seized," Amirkhanov stated.
Additionally, in the Almaty region, another cache with a large batch of drugs was discovered. "The total amount of the seized substance was two kilograms of mephedrone, equivalent to 10,000 single doses. The large batch did not reach drug users," noted the head of the department.
The detainee gave a confession, the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized. A pre-trial investigation has been launched under Article 297 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan; the alleged drug courier now faces up to 12 years in prison. He has been placed in a temporary detention facility.
"The Ministry of Internal Affairs will strictly suppress attempts to spread drugs. Work in this direction continues," Amirkhanov said.
