At least ten people were killed and another sixteen injured in a brawl that broke out at the El Castillo prison in Mexico's Sinaloa state, the website infohub.kz reports.

The incident was reported by Izvestia, citing a translation of an article in the Spanish newspaper El País. According to that report, National Guard officers were sent into the penitentiary to restore order.

"Among the dead was a visitor who had come to see relatives held at the facility," the article says.

It notes that the prison was brought under control after law enforcement intervened. The injured received first aid, and visits scheduled for that day were cancelled. The state prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The report says the incident occurred against the backdrop of an ongoing security crisis in Sinaloa, linked in part to clashes between criminal groups.
