The fully electric version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV has been officially approved for use in Kazakhstan. The vehicle type approval for the G 580 with EQ powertrain was registered on September 8, covering 149 SUVs, according to infohub.kz.
According to registration documents, this is the G 580 modification equipped with four permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors — one per wheel. The SUV has all-wheel drive, and the CATL-produced traction battery is located under the passenger compartment floor, between the axles.
Depending on the version, the range is between 527 and 575 kilometers. The battery capacity is not specified in the vehicle type approval, but its weight — from 712 to 727 kilograms — and the number of cells — 216 — are known.
Thus, the G 580 became the first fully electric member of the G-Class family to receive Kazakh vehicle type approval. Externally, it is still the recognizable "Geländewagen," but instead of an internal combustion engine, traction is provided by electric motors mounted on each wheel.
Production of the model is established at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria. It is from there that the electric SUVs will be supplied to the Kazakh market.
On the official Mercedes-Benz website in Kazakhstan, the G 580 with EQ technology has already appeared in the model lineup. The stated price starts at 94.4 million tenge.
