Kazakh athlete Elmira Syzdykova has claimed silver at the 2026 Asian Games in the up-to-76kg weight category. In the decisive bout, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist lost 1:5 to Japan's Yuka Kagami, the 2024 Olympic champion and 2023 world champion, infohub.kz reports.
The final unfolded dramatically: after the first period, Syzdykova led 1:0. But in the second half of the bout, Kagami scored five points and closed out the match with a 5:1 victory.
Earlier, Zeinep Bayanova won bronze at the 2026 Games.
In freestyle wrestling, Nachyn Kuular and Edige Kasymbek took bronze medals, while Azamat Dauletbekov lost his third-place bout.
Kazakhstan's Greco-Roman wrestling team won one medal at the Asian Games. Meirzhan Shermakhanbet took bronze. Shamil Ozhaev and Islam Evloev fell just short of the podium.
The 20th Summer Asian Games in Japan officially opened on September 19. Athletes from 45 countries are competing for 460 sets of medals. Kazakhstan's team at the 2026 Asian Games comprises 558 athletes in 35 sports.
