Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has set a new Champions League record: the Norwegian forward needed the fewest matches in the tournament's history to score 60 goals. He reached the milestone in his 60th game, according to infohub.kz.
The record was broken in the home match of the second round of the Champions League league phase against PSG. Haaland scored twice, but the English club lost 2-4 to the reigning champions.
The closest pursuer in terms of speed to 60 goals, Lionel Messi, needed 20 more matches to reach the mark.
Fewest matches to 60 Champions League goals:
Erling Haaland — 60 matches;
Lionel Messi — 80;
Robert Lewandowski — 85;
Kylian Mbappe — 89;
Cristiano Ronaldo — 98.
In addition, Haaland became the youngest player to reach 60 Champions League goals. The Norwegian was 26 years and 85 days old — beating Messi's record by just one day.
His brace against PSG allowed Haaland to set another achievement. He now has 38 goals for Manchester City in the Champions League — surpassing Sergio Aguero (36) to become the club's all-time top scorer in the competition.
Haaland has scored in the Champions League for Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City. Even before reaching 60 goals, he was the fastest player in the tournament's history to score 30, 40 and 50 goals.
