Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said the country intends to build about 150 bunkers on its border with Russia, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the defense chief, the construction is part of the creation of a Baltic defense zone in Ida-Viru County. Of the total number of fortifications, 100 bunkers will be located on state land, and about 50 on municipal or private land.
Pevkur stressed that Estonia does not plan to seize private land along the Narva River on a large scale. Construction on private plots will require agreement with landowners — possible options include compensation for land use, rent, or expropriation, but there is currently no plan to acquire the entire vast territory.
In addition, the defense minister said that over the next four years, funding for national defense activities for young people, as well as drone training, will be increased across Estonia.
It was previously reported that Lithuanian authorities had prepared a detailed plan to evacuate residents in the event of a military threat — citizens are to be evacuated to Poland. Later, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov explained under what circumstances Lithuanian territory would come under the aim of nuclear weapons. In addition, German authorities began checking the readiness of the country's healthcare system for war and a mass influx of wounded.
