As of August 2, 2026, the European Union has begun enforcing the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). The European Commission, together with national authorities, has started applying the new rules, including requirements for transparency of deepfakes, reports infohub.kz.
The new regulations require labeling generated content and informing users that they are interacting with a chatbot, not a human. Deepfakes must also carry a special machine-readable label.
Regulators will pay special attention to developers of general-purpose AI models (GPAI). Providers of advanced systems with systemic risk are required to comply with strictly defined security measures to protect against cyberattacks, chemical, and biological threats. More than 180 organizations have already signed a special Code of Practice on transparency of generated content.
Regulators will receive scientific support from an expert council of 60 independent specialists. Professor Alessandro Abate from the University of Oxford has been appointed as the chief scientific advisor. Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Henna Virkkunen emphasized that these steps will strengthen trust in technology.
