Relatives of 25-year-old athlete Akhmet Dukenbai, who was killed in the Zhambyl region, have requested state protection. They fear for their safety and insist on an investigation into possible involvement of other individuals, according to infohub.kz.

The victim's sister, Zarina Dukenbayeva, said that on the night of August 1, four or five shots were fired near their home. About an hour later, police informed the family that Akhmet Dukenbai had been taken to the hospital in critical condition. He later died.

The deceased's wife, Altynai Boranbai, said that shortly before the murder, her husband had warned her about a conflict with unknown people. According to her, he asked her to watch the children closely, not let them go far, and be cautious.

The athlete's father, Serik Dukenbaiuly, said he fears for the lives of his relatives and demanded that the family be provided with state armed protection.

Earlier it was reported that the man was shot at about three in the morning in the village of Lugovoye, Turar Ryskulov district. Relatives claimed he had received threats and suggested possible involvement of a local criminal group. Police have launched a pre-trial investigation into the murder; a suspect has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility.
