A fatal traffic accident occurred on the Astana-Petropavlovsk highway in the early hours of August 10. A pedestrian was killed under the wheels of a Toyota Camry, and another person was hospitalized, according to infohub.kz.
An eyewitness to the aftermath of the crash told on the social network Threads that around 2 a.m. he was driving towards Astana and stopped at a Qazaq Oil gas station. Near the station, he saw a man lying on the roadway and the driver of the car, who, according to him, was in severe shock.
"Right near the gas station, the driver was sitting on the ground. He was holding his head and couldn't come to his senses. It was clear that the man was in deep shock after what had happened," wrote the author of the post.
The author also recounted the words of people at the scene that before the accident, the pedestrian was allegedly drunk and ran onto the road. However, the eyewitness stressed that he did not see the moment of impact, so he cannot confirm this version.
The police department of Akmola region confirmed the fatal accident. According to the department, the accident occurred at about 1:45 a.m. on the 234th kilometer of the Astana-Petropavlovsk highway.
"The driver, driving a Toyota Camry, at the 234th km of the Astana-Petropavlovsk highway, struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road in an unspecified place. The pedestrian died at the scene. One female passenger with various injuries was hospitalized," police reported.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that in the first half of 2026, more than 15,000 traffic accidents were registered in Kazakhstan, in which 832 people died. According to the inDrive service, 86% of fatal cases occurred in the regions of the country, where a significant part of accidents happen on intercity roads.
