Nearly three years after a tragic accident on the Atyrau–Astrakhan highway, the driver responsible for a crash that killed three people has been handed a prison sentence, according to the website infohub.kz citing the regional prosecutor's office.

The road accident occurred on August 21, 2023. The driver violated traffic rules, causing a collision that resulted in three fatalities and several injuries of varying severity.

The criminal case was sent to court in 2024. However, earlier court rulings were reviewed and overturned, prolonging the proceedings.

On February 23, 2026, following a new trial, the driver was found guilty under Part 4 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He was sentenced to five years in prison and banned from driving for seven years.

On June 4, 2026, the criminal appeals panel of the Atyrau Regional Court upheld the sentence unchanged.

Since the beginning of the year, 18 people in the region have been sentenced to actual prison terms for serious traffic violations resulting in severe consequences.
