A ferry carrying 279 passengers has capsized and sunk off the coast of northern Cyprus, with casualties reported, according to infohub.kz.

The incident occurred about 2 to 2.5 kilometers from the shore of the city of Girne. The ship's captain reported that the ferry began taking on water and capsized. A search and rescue operation is currently underway. Boats that were near the scene have arrived to assist those in distress.

Authorities of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have reported several fatalities among those on board.
