The first firing squad execution in the U.S. armed forces in 81 years will be carried out publicly, with the date set for December 3. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth announced this, according to infohub.kz.
The execution concerns Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 fellow service members at a military base in Texas in 2009.
"We will make sure that people can watch this, that the execution is public, because people need to understand that such actions carry serious consequences," U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said.
The Pentagon chief did not disclose exactly how the department would ensure the public nature of the firing squad execution.
It is noted that this will be the first firing squad execution of an American service member in 81 years: the last such sentence was carried out in January 1945. At that time, a U.S. Army private was executed for desertion in France.
It was previously reported that Donald Trump approved the carrying out of the death sentence against Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others at Fort Hood. The execution date was later set for December 3, 2026.
