Researchers from the University of Nottingham have developed an innovative gel that stimulates the regeneration of tooth enamel. The product can prevent cavities and reduce tooth sensitivity, according to infohub.kz.
The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications. The gel, created by scientists from the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, mimics the natural process of enamel formation that occurs in childhood.
Unlike traditional treatments, the new product contains no fluoride. It consists of proteins that, upon application, form a thin coating, filling micro-cracks and pores. The gel extracts calcium and phosphate ions from saliva, initiating a process of epitaxial mineralization. As a result, new crystals grow in exact alignment with the tooth's structure.
First author Abshar Hassan emphasizes that the restored enamel successfully passed tests simulating daily wear: brushing, chewing, and exposure to acidic foods. Lead researcher Alvaro Mata reported that the startup Mintech-Bio has already begun preparations for commercializing the technology.
