Four years after the tragic January 2022 events, Kazakhstan law enforcement agencies continue to uncover illegally hidden weapons, reports infohub.kz.
Acting on operational information provided by an inmate, officers from the operational department of facility No. 22 of the Penal Correction System, coordinated by the specialized prosecutor's office and the 5th department of the National Security Committee (KNB) for East Kazakhstan Region, discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition in the Nauryzbai district of Almaty.
Preliminary data suggest the hideout may have been set up during the January 2022 unrest and remained unknown to law enforcement for a long time.
During the inspection, a smoothbore rifle and ammunition were seized. The weapon has been sent for forensic ballistic examination. Investigative and operational measures are underway to determine the weapon's origin and identify those involved in hiding it.
"Even years later, operational work continues to yield results. Information obtained through work with inmates often helps solve past crimes, uncover weapons caches, and prevent potential threats to public safety," said Saltanat Ozhikanova, official representative of the Department of the Penal Correction System for East Kazakhstan Region.
