France's Constitutional Council has struck down a ban on social media for children under 15, ruling that the measure overly restricts freedom of expression, reports infohub.kz.
The decision is a setback for President Emmanuel Macron, who had championed the ban and hoped to implement it before the end of his term.
Following the ruling, Macron tasked Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu with drafting a new version of the law as quickly as possible, one that aligns with the Council's decision and EU regulations.
The Élysée Palace stated that Macron remains committed to introducing restrictions for children by spring 2027.
What was decided on assisted dying
The Constitutional Council also approved a law allowing assisted dying for terminally ill patients through doctor-prescribed medication. The court added several clarifications.
If a person under guardianship requests such assistance, the doctor must consider the guardian's opinion.
Medical staff and pharmacists may refuse to participate in the procedure on personal grounds.
Additionally, private healthcare facilities will not be required to perform the procedure.
