Recovery after serious illnesses and surgeries in Kazakhstan is available not only in specialized centers but also at local polyclinics under the state guaranteed benefits package (GOBMP) and mandatory social health insurance (OSMS), the Ministry of Health reports. More details at infohub.kz.
Nazerke Uldakanova, head of the Rehabilitation and Restorative Treatment Center at City Polyclinic No. 16 in Almaty, said that with a referral from a primary care physician, patients can undergo a course of restorative treatment including physical therapy, physiotherapy, and other rehabilitation methods. The program is tailored individually based on diagnosis, health status, and patient needs. The main goal is to help patients regain lost functions, restore mobility, increase independence, and improve quality of life.
In Kazakhstan, medical rehabilitation is implemented in stages: the first stage occurs during the acute phase (up to 72 hours) of illness, surgery, or injury (at the hospital level); the second stage takes place during recovery after illness or injury (within the first six months) and during the period of residual symptoms; the third stage is provided in outpatient polyclinics, day and round-the-clock hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and sanatorium-resort facilities.
Uldakanova noted that in the first half of 2026, 11,555 patients in Almaty underwent medical rehabilitation. Of these, 5,412 received help at the second stage and 6,143 at the third stage. Previously, Kursiv reported that the Ministry of Health is preparing a new hybrid model of pediatric care. It is planned to combine the work of pediatricians and general practitioners while maintaining pediatric districts.
