The ambitious project of smart satellite cities in the Almaty region, known as G4 City, was first conceived in 2008 but its implementation has been repeatedly delayed. The current status of construction and attracted investments is reported by infohub.kz.
G4 City includes four structurally integrated modern smart cities along the Kapshagai highway. It was planned to create favorable conditions for business and comfortable living. The first settlement was expected in 2012, then postponed to 2017, but due to various reasons, including the coronavirus pandemic, deadlines shifted. In 2023, the Kazakh government established a special economic zone for G4 City until 2048.
The editorial board sent a request to the Akimat of Alatau city, to which the project now belongs. The response stated that the project is long-term, involving phased development of the territory, construction of housing, infrastructure, public and business, industrial, and logistics zones.
In 2024–2025, two modern schools and two medical outposts were built and commissioned. Future plans include construction of educational, healthcare, cultural, sports facilities, and improvement of public spaces. Also under construction are main utility networks, water intake pumping stations, treatment facilities, gas distribution stations, electrical substations, and other facilities.
Significant investments are being attracted to the project. In 2024, 37.1 billion tenge was attracted to Alatau city; in 2025, 115.8 billion tenge. For the current year, plans are to attract over 100 billion tenge for the development of residential, commercial, and engineering infrastructure. Construction of commercial facilities (residential complexes, shopping malls, hotels, logistics and production facilities) is carried out by private investors independently, so the Akimat does not disclose deadlines and financing volumes.
Implementation of the project is expected to create about 60,000 jobs by 2048, with total investment reaching 3.7 trillion tenge.
