Chinese automaker Geely has developed a fast-charging system that can replenish an electric vehicle's battery from 10% to 70% in just 4.5 minutes, according to infohub.kz.
Reuters reports that achieving such figures requires charging infrastructure rated at 2.2 MW and a battery capable of absorbing energy at very high rates.
The battery can be charged to 97% in 8 minutes and 40 seconds at normal ambient temperature.
At that power level, the main challenge is not only speed but also controlling the battery's temperature and condition. Geely therefore uses artificial intelligence both in the cloud and directly in the vehicle.
The technology models the battery's behavior and, using deep learning algorithms, monitors its condition, manages thermal conditions and predicts potential problems.
The new system appears to be a response to BYD's advances in fast charging. The company previously unveiled a technology capable of charging a battery from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. Chinese manufacturers are thus already competing not only on range and power but also on EV charging speed.
Earlier, Kursiv Auto reported that the Geely Galaxy TT had entered the Chinese market from 8.7 million tenge.
