German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has demanded answers from Russia over the death of an employee at a plague research institute and raised the possibility of introducing travel restrictions within the European Union, the website infohub.kz reports.

The Russian service of Deutsche Welle published a translation of an excerpt from an interview with the head of Germany's foreign ministry, Johann Wadephul, given to Bild. In it, he did not rule out travel restrictions amid suspicions of plague in Russia.

Commenting on the death of an employee at the institute in Irkutsk Region that studies plague, the minister demanded that Moscow provide "full transparency about exactly what research is being conducted in Russian laboratories."

"The world has questions, and Russia is obliged to answer them. We cannot and will not take the risk. If necessary, the EU must take decisive measures to restrict movement to protect our population," the politician said.
