Use of popular GLP-1 drugs in patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with a reduced risk of bone fractures, reports infohub.kz.
A new study found that GLP-1 receptor agonists, widely used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, are linked to a lower fracture risk. Although weight loss typically reduces bone density, this class of drugs showed a protective effect.
In a patient study, researchers compared fracture rates among those taking GLP-1 drugs with those on alternative therapies. Results showed a statistically significant reduction in fractures in the GLP-1 group.
Experts suggest this benefit may stem not only from improved blood sugar control but also from direct effects on bone metabolism. Understanding these mechanisms could help doctors choose safer treatments for patients at high risk of osteoporosis.
