A court in Seoul has sentenced a Chinese national to 20 years in prison for his role in a hacking scheme that targeted BTS member Jungkook and South Korean businessmen. The criminals attempted to steal assets worth over 38 billion won (approximately 12.5 billion tenge), according to infohub.kz.
According to the investigation, the convicted individual, surnamed Chun, was part of a criminal group that collected personal data of wealthy individuals from August 2023 to January 2025. The perpetrators then registered mobile numbers in their victims' names and gained access to their accounts, from which they transferred money.
Among the targets was Jungkook. The hackers attempted to steal his shares in HYBE, the parent company of agency BigHit Music, worth 8.4 billion won (about 2.76 billion tenge). The agency responded in time and prevented the criminals from completing the operation.
The court also noted that Chun did not show sincere remorse. According to the judges, the criminals deliberately targeted wealthy individuals and took their assets, even though the victims themselves had made no mistakes.
