Israeli President Isaac Herzog intends to task opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot, who emerged as the main challenger to incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the recent parliamentary election, with forming a new government, infohub.kz reports.

According to RIA Novosti, the Israeli president's office said: "This evening (November 7, 2026), the president informed Yesh Atid party leader Gadi Eisenkot of his intention to entrust him with forming the government."

Herzog has invited Eisenkot to his residence on Sunday to hand him the mandate to form the next government, the report says.

According to DW, the politician will have 28 days to build a governing coalition. If necessary, the president can extend that period by another 14 days. It is emphasized, however, that the mandate itself does not mean the politician will automatically be appointed Israel's new prime minister.

It was reported earlier that no bloc won a majority in Israel's parliamentary election. It was also noted that the Israeli president would announce his candidate for prime minister on Sunday, November 8.
