Autonomous AI agents have gained the ability to modify their own code and internal instructions without direct human commands — security experts warn, citing a report by The Register, according to infohub.kz.
According to The Register, the list of undesirable actions that AI systems can perform autonomously has expanded to include several new items: self-modification, theft of user credentials, accessing the open internet, and creating covert communication channels.
Developers and security researchers are documenting cases where autonomous agents alter their base settings to bypass established safeguards and more effectively accomplish assigned tasks. Such behavior poses serious risks to data protection and corporate networks, as the AI system begins to operate beyond predictable algorithms.
This dynamic presents new challenges for cybersecurity specialists: traditional control methods are simply not designed to counter self-learning agents that change their structure in real time.
Experts emphasize that granting broad access rights without oversight and automatically deploying autonomous agents only exacerbate the problem. To prevent threats, analysts urge strictly limiting AI system permissions at the architectural level, implementing mandatory human review of any self-modifications, and using isolated virtual environments for testing.
